At an elevation f 1730 m, Srinagar is perched in the western part of the Kashmir valley. Founded by Raja Pravarasen in the 6th century AD, Srinagar is the capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The city is divided into two by the River Jhelum that flows through the city.
Known the worldwide for its picturesque lakes, the famous lakes of Srinagar are the Dal Lake, Nagin Lake and Jhelum Lake. The Dal Lake is the most famous of the three and is 6.4 m long and 4 km wide. Enjoy the cruise on the traditional houseboats of Kashmir known as the sikharas.
Srinagar is also known for series of Mughal Gardens. At the end of the Dal Lake are the Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh. Asaf Khan, brother of Noor Jahan and father of Mumtaz Mahal, laid down the Nishat Bagh or the Garden of Gladness. Jahangir laid down the Shalimar Bagh for his wife Noor Jahan. It has a series of terraces linked with water channels surrounded with ornamental pools. Chashma Shahi is a much smaller garden built by Shah Jahan. Akbar built the Nazim Bagh or the Garden of the Morning Breeze and is one of the earliest gardens of the city.
Among the Muslim places of worship in Srinagar, you may pay obeisance at the Jama Masjid, Rozahbal Mosque, Pattar Masjid and Hazratbal Mosque. The most remarkable feature of the Jama Masjid is the wooden pillars supporting the roof. Each of the pillars is made of single deodar tree. Pattar Masjid was built in 1623 AD for Noor Jahan ad was renamed Shahi Mosque. Hazratbal Mosque or the Majestic Palace houses the hair of Prophet Mohammad.
The other places to check out in Srinagar are the Temple of Shankracharya built by Jaluka, the son of emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century AD and Sri Pratap Singh Museum. You can also go on excursion tours to Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam from Srinagar.
