At an elevation of 1200 m above the mean sea level, Kullu lies on the confluence of the rivers Beas and Sarvari in the state of Himachal Pradesh and 240 km from Shimla. Earlier known as Kulanthapitha, which means the 'End of the Habitable World', the history of Kullu can be traced back to the 1st century AD. Kullu was under the reign of local rulers during the medieval period and later came under the British rule.
Kullu is a major hill retreat especially for the people of the northern Gangetic plains who find a haven here from the heat waves during the summer months. Kullu is famous for its pristine beauty untouched by modern human activities. Besides the landscapes, rivers, lakes and mountains to admire, there are several historic temples in Kullu.
The eminent temples in Kullu are the Raghunathji Temple, Vaishno Devi Temple and Bijli Mahadev Temple. Naggar, the capital of Kullu for almost 1400 years, lies on the left bank of the River Beas. You can visit the famous Vishnu Temple, Tripura Sundari Temple and Krishna Temple. The Basheshwar Mahadev Temple at Bajura, 15 km from Kullu, is also very sacred. Manikaran is 45 km from Kullu and is known for the hot water springs with curative powers. An established pilgrimage spot for both Hindus and Sikhs, the town has temples dedicated to Lord Rama and Shiva and also a gurudwara.
20 km from Kullu on the way to Manali, you will come across Katrain. It is well known for orchard of apples and fish farming. 34 km from Kullu is a small village called Larji. The place is famous for trout fishing. Kasol is another hamlet known for trout fishing along with its marvelous sceneries.
