Kodaikanal means the 'Gift of the Forest' in Tamil. Positioned 120 km from Madurai in the upper Palani Hills at an elevation of 2133 m., Kodaikanal was founded by American missionaries in 1845 AD. But the early history of Kodaikanal stretches further back to the 14th century AD when the people residing at the foothills escaped to Kodai during the invasion of Tipu Sultan.
Kodaikanal is famed for unspoiled natural beauty. Visit the Coaker's Walk, Priest's Walk, Pillar Rock, Bryant Park and Chettiar Park to have a close encounter with the nature in its best. Kurinji Andavar Temple is a famous temple in Kodaikanal. People visit the temple particularly to spot the Kurinji Flower that blooms every 12 years.
Berijam Lake is 21 km from Kodaikanal. The star shaped lake spread over 24 hectare of the area is ideal for boating and fishing. The tourist can enjoy picnic lunches at this spot. Kodaikanal Boat and Rowing Club organizes boat races. People also head towards Kodaikanal in pursuit of adventure sports like trekking and rock-climbing.
