Dehradun, Hill Stations in India Dehradun is the capital city of the newly carved hill state of Uttaranchal. One of the oldest cities of India, Dehradun has found mention in the written records dating back to 250 BC. Dehradun lies on the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas and is the gateway to enter the state.

There are several religious places in Dehradun worth visiting. The prime among them is the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple lies on the banks of the seasonal river in the Garhi Cantonment Area. The water from the ceiling of the temple falls over the Shivalinga, thus giving the temple its name. Tapovan is a sacred site on the Dehradun-Rajpur Road. The place is sanctified because it is believed that Guru Dronacharya, the teacher of Kauravas and Pandavas, underwent penance at this very site. Shakya Center is 12 km from Dehradun. It is a Buddhist Gompa ornamented with murals. A center of Tibetan medicines is besides this Buddhist temple.

Among the natural attractions of the city are the robber's Cave and Sahastradhara. 8 km from the Dehradun, Robber's Cave is also called the Gucchu Pani. The major attraction of this place is that a stream of water goes underground and then reappears a few meters from there. The place is perfect place for picnic lunches and getaway from the mad rush of the city. At a distance of 14 km from the city is the Sahastradhara, the Sulphur water spring with medicinal properties. The bathing in the spring can cure of several skin diseases. Government has made arrangements for bathing in privacy because of its huge popularity.

Malsi Deer Park is 10 km from Dehradun on the road to Mussoorie. One can easily spot deer and neelgai in this park. Mini Zoo and children's park are a major draw fro the children. The prime attraction of Dehradun is the Rajaji National Park situated 23 km from the city. The national park comprises of 3 sanctuaries, namely, Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla and is named after the President of India C. Rajgopalachari. Opened in `983, the national park is 830 km of area and is home to 23 species of mammals and 315 species of birds including barking deer, elephants, peafowl, leopards and sambars.

Other places of interest in Dehradun are the Anthropological Survey of India, Botanical Survey of India, Forest Research Institute, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Indian Military Academy, Rashtriya Indian Military College, Survey of India, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and Zoological Survey of India.
