Established by British Governor-General Lord Dalhousie in 1854 AD, the hill town of Dalhousie is a known as the Gateway to Chamba. Spread over five distinct hills, namely, Kathlog, Portreyn, Tehra, Bakrota and Balun, altitude of Dalhousie varies from 1,525 m to 2,378 m and covers an area of 14 sq km. Only 90 km from Pathankot, Dalhousie is a getaway for the people of the northern Gangetic plain to get a much wanted break from the heat and grime of the plains and to enjoy pleasant climatic conditions of the hill station.
Visit the Subhash Baoli, 1 km from Dalhousie, named after Subhash Chandra Bose who used to spent a lot of time over here. One can get a mesmerizing view of the snow-capped mountains from here. Almost half a kilometer away from here is the Jandhri Ghat. This is the place from where the former rulers of Chamba ruled and their palace is the evidence of the past glory. Panchpula is spot 3 km away from Dalhousie, named so because of the series of five bridges beneath which is the flowing spring water. On the way to Panchpula, you will come across Satdhara. It is a place where seven springs are reputed to have curative properties because of Mica content.
After having enough of the natural beauty, concentrate on the manmade heritages of the town, which is the happy reminder of the bygone British era in the region. One must see the churches of Dalhousie, which are the fine example of the colonial architecture. The noteworthy among these are the St. Andrew's Church, St. Patrick's Church, St. John's Church and St. Francis Church. Besides the churches, you will also come across several colonial bungalows and other buildings.
While at Dalhousie, one can also go on excursions to Khajjiar, Chamba, Palampur, Baijnath, Bir and Biling, Mcleodganj and Dharamsala. These places can be covered on a day excursion or on longer tours comprising of couple of days.
